Shoreline Restoration

Issue:  A lakeshore owner on Big Sandy Lake near McGregor, MN has a steep sandy shoreline with severe erosion problems. A large portion of the sandy shoreline has eroded away, causing the existing vegetation and trees to fall in the lake.

Action:  A shoreline stabilization project is designed by the local Soil and Water Conservation District engineer.  Due to the difficulty of accessing the site, the riprap and rock stabilization materials used on the project are placed with use of ramps, chutes, and hand labor.  Small rock is incorporated into the riprap so that bareroot shrubs and native plant plugs can be planted to assist in holding riprap and soil in place in the future.
